Pre-Service/Orientation Training

Mandatory training for all new foster parents, before they begin fostering. Referrals to this training will come from the resource team managing you application.

Pre Service training topics include:

  • How children come into care
    • CF&CS Act
  • Child development
  • Impact of Abuse and Neglect
  • Attachment
  • Loss and Grief
  • Working with the birth family
  • Expectations of foster parents
    • Standards for Foster Parents
    • Protocols
  • The Childs Care Team
  • Challenging behaviours
  • Positive parenting
  • Supports to caregivers

Those fostering for the Aboriginal teams or delegated agencies will also receive Aboriginal Cultural teachings.

BC Foster Parent Education Program

This training will be made available to you after you have signed your foster home agreement and have become a foster parent. This training is managed differently in each of the sub regions. Ask you recruitment or support resource worker for the correct referral information.

Safe Babies Training

This program is specialized training offered throughout the region to suitable caregivers who want to care for infants who have been prenatally exposed to drug and or alcohol. Contact your MCFD Resource Support worker to discuss if this training is appropriate for you.
